Phone system

As a practice we are very lucky not to get many complaints but one thing that people find very difficult is getting through on the phones.

We have been trying various things to help with this from promoting our online service, “Patient Services” which allows you to book, cancel, check or change appointments and order medication; “eConsult” which gives you the option of consulting a GP online 24/7 and receiving a reply by the end of the following day; and have also increased o...ur staffing levels but still our patients find it increasingly frustrating to get through.

We contacted NHS Grampian to see what options we had and they suggested we move to an 0345 number.

The advantages of an 0345 number:
• You will be able to select the option you want (emergencies, appointments or general enquiries) immediately, you won’t just get the engaged tone if all the lines are busy.

• Calls are held in a queue so you will always know how close you are to your call being answered. That way, if the queue is long, you can make an informed decision as to whether you hold on or call back later.

• The calls are free to you, if you have local calls included in your call package (Otherwise it would cost the price of a local call or from a mobile it would be the cost of the mobile call plus the carrier’s service charge).

Disadvantages of an 0345 number:

• The length of time the call system queues for is set by NHS Grampian. If, after that time the call was still not answered you would hear the message, “Due to the high volume of calls we are not able to answer your call at the moment”, and the system would terminate the call. NHSG assure us this has not been a problem elsewhere and the queue time can be extended if this does become an issue – but obviously we hope it wouldn't!

Q. Would you like to see the practice move to a 0345 number?

Results from our poll:

66% - Yes

34% - No

Online service for appointments and repeat prescriptions.

We have an online service for ordering repeat prescriptions and booking and cancelling GP appointments at our Banchory surgery. This will allow patients to access these services via the internet even when we are closed. If you are interested in registering for this service please pick up a registration form from the surgery or download it from our information page. Click here for information.

For security and patient confidentiality each patient will require their own login name and password so will need to complete their own form and return it in person to the surgery.

Doctors in training

We have been an established training practice for many years and are very grateful to our patients for their support in helping to develop the next generation of doctors. As well as GP trainees, we regularly receive placements of senior medical students from Aberdeen University and offer 'taster' experiences to newly qualified doctors. The surgery and the community nursing team are also involved with the training of both undergraduate and post graduate nursing students. More information on training at the surgery can be found here.
